The lab / History
The history of the Laboratories of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology begins with their founding in 1988. Director of the Laboratories until 1991 was Associate Professor Dr. George Antonakopoulos, who together with Assistant Professor Dr. Theodoros Kalopisi were the first two faculty members of the Laboratories.
In 1990 Dr. Yiannis Siatitsas was appointed as Associate Professor of Anatomy, whereupon he assumed the position of Director of the Laboratories of Anatomy, Histology, Embryology in 1991 following the departure of Dr. G. Antonakopoulos for the University of Thessaly Medical School (remained until 2010).
Dr. Athanasios Karabelas was elected Associate Professor of Neurosurgery In 1997 (retired in 2011) whereas, in 1998 Dr. George Tzanakakis was elected Associate Professor of Anatomy, and undertook as Director of the Laboratory of Histology-Embryology.
In continuation Dr. Petros Myrillas (Anatomy 2002-2007, moved to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Dr. Alexander Zafeiropoulos (Histology 2004-2014, moved to the Section of Laboratory Medicine) and Dr. Konstantinos Paspalas (Neuroanatomy 2005-2010, moved to a University in the USA) were elected as Assistant Professors, respectively.
In 2010, Dr. George Tzanakakis was promoted to Professor of Anatomy-Histology and undertook as Director of the Laboratories of Anatomy, Histology, Embryology of the Medical School of the University of Crete.
In 2013, Dr. Giannis Tsiaousis was elected Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Dr. Dragana Nikitovic-Tzanakaki was elected Lecturer. In 2015, Dr. Nikitovic-Tzanakaki was elected Assistant Professor of Histology-Embryology. Both have been promoted to Associate Professors of Anatomy (2019) and Histology-Embryology (2020) respectively.
Members of the Laboratories are also Dr. Katerina Berdiaki as PD407 from 2006-2013 and as postdoc to date, Mrs. Viktoria Kokkinaki as ETEP since 2005, Dr. Ioanna Spyridaki as EDIP since 2014 and Mrs. Maria Bouranda as IDACH since 2013, while Mrs. Maria Dimopoulou served as EDIP during the period 2006-2015.
